The American Humane Association has been celebrating Be Kind to Animals Week® since 1915! In this annual tradition, they commemorate the role animals play in our lives, promote ways to continue to treat them humanely, and encourage others, especially children, to do the same. As animal lover Betty White says, “As far as I am concerned, every week should be Be Kind to Animals Week®.”

While much progress has been made since the program was launched almost a century ago, the fact remains that 7-8 million animals still end up in shelters every year. “One of the most important ways to ‘be kind’ to animals is to adopt a shelter pet and give them the forever home they so desperately need,” says Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Association. “If adopting is not possible, consider fostering a pet or volunteering with a local shelter or rescue group. Our pets are devoted to us and for them every day is ‘Be Kind to People Day.’ The very least we can do is show them our love and compassion. There are so many ways for all of us to lend kindness to a voiceless, helpless animal.”

One way you can help support the animals is by joining a local animal event. Chuck & Don’s will be participating in the following walk-a-thon events this Saturday, May 4 and next Saturday, May 11. Choose one or both – then come out to support the animals and be sure to stop by and see us!

5/11 Animal Humane Society of Goodhue County Walk-A-Thon - 10am-2pm at Colvill Park in Red Wing

Colorado
5/4 Furry Scurry to benefit Dumb Friends League – 9am-Noon at Washington Park in Denver.
5/11 Lucky Mutt Strut to benefit MaxFund Animal Adoption Shelter – 8am-12pm at Cheesman Park in Denver. Our mascot, Lucky, will be there too!

These events will take place rain or shine – so please come! Help support the animals and the organizations that care for them. Be a voice for the voiceless!

We are delighted to be one of the sponsors  of this year’s Dumb Friends League Furry Scurry event! It will be held May 5^th, beginning at 9:00 AM at Washington Park in Denver.

The Dumb Friends League annually holds this event to help them care for as many as 24,000 homeless pets yearly and to provide services to the community.

This is HappyDogGeno writing this post. Don’t worry, that’s me. I’m going undercover as the detective on duty. I even went so far as to disguise my breed so I look like a TINY dog. I can’t be too careful as I’m sniffing out the details for this year’s Dumb Friend’s League Furry Scurry.

Here’s the scoop so far:

• Date: May 5, 2012 beginning at 9:00AM
• What it is: A two-mile walk for animals in Washington Park in Denver, CO

• What you need: A furry friend to walk with you

Dad is a partial sponsor of the event and will have a booth there, so make sure you stop by and visit! You’ll find out about our new and existing locations in Colorado, and there will be lots of giveaways for pets and humans alike.

In a nutshell, this past weekend in Denver was just a whole lot of fun!

We celebrated the Grand Opening of our Denver – Cherry Creek store which is the first store we have opened in Denver. (Keep watching for more store openings in Denver.)

We were excited to see and meet so many Denver pets and their people at the Grand Opening. Front Range German Shepherd Rescue had one dog go to his forever home and four pending adoptions during their time with us! In addition to Front Range German Shepherd Rescue, we thank Paul Maynard author Elaine Marlier, Hands on Hounds Massage and animal communicator Jennifer L. Key for participating in our special day.

A few blocks away, the Furry Scurry was taking place. The large sea of people and pets, who participated in the two-mile walk for animals, were treated to unseasonably warm temperatures in the mid 80’s with sunshine.  According to Chuck it took more than 45 minutes for everyone who was registered for the race to actually cross the start line!

Chuck and Bob had the opportunity to talk with so many of you at the Furry Scurry, finding out what makes your pet happy.

The Furry Scurry goal was to raise $1,000,000.00 to help the homeless animals, as of this writing they have achieved $759,024.54. It’s not too late to make a gift to help them reach their goal!
