May 6^th -12^th, 2012 is a big week for animals. Both National Pet Week and National Be Kind to Animals Week occur.

National Pet Week is widely celebrated in the US.The goals are to promote responsible pet ownership, honor the relationship between humans and animals and bring an awareness of veterinary medicine to the public. If you have a pet, this page is an excellent resource, covering topics such as finding a vet and pets in vehicles.

Be Kind to Animals Week was started in 1915 by the American Humane Association. The goal is to pay tribute to the role animals play in our lives and encourage all to treat animals humanely.

We are delighted to be one of the sponsors  of this year’s Dumb Friends League Furry Scurry event! It will be held May 5^th, beginning at 9:00 AM at Washington Park in Denver.

The Dumb Friends League annually holds this event to help them care for as many as 24,000 homeless pets yearly and to provide services to the community.

Another store opening in Colorado! Our Aurora store will open Monday, May 7, 2012.  Located at 6380 S. Parker Road (Arapahoe Crossings), we are delighted to offer our new neighbors the same quality products and service we offer at all our stores.  Bring your pet, stop in on Monday, May 7^th and say hello!

All of our Colorado stores will be celebrating Grand Openings on Saturday, May 19^th, 2012 from 10am-2pm.  Each store features different events and attractions, but the common denominator at all the events will be fun! Some of the highlights from the stores include:

• Aurora - 6380 S. Parker Road  (Arapahoe Crossings): A Western theme, including music, Clydesdale  carriage rides, Denver Fly-Ball dogs display, Ron Johnson K-9 Training, an appearance by Colorado Avalanche’s mascot, Bernie , and pet photographer Paul Maynard – receive a free 4”x6” pet photo.

• Littleton - 5055 S. Kipling Street (Kipling Marketplace): Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster will be appearing as well as pet trainer Ann Draznin (11am-2pm). The Humane Society of the South Platte Valley Pet Adoptions will also be on site.

• Centennial location – 2253 E Briarwood Avenue (The Streets at SouthGlenn): Cirque-style performers and a gypsy jazz artist will entertain you as your dog receives a massage from Hand on Hounds pet massage or receives a free nail trim. There will also be a Delta Society therapy dogs display.

• Cherry Creek location – 201 University Boulevard: Jazz pianist and a pet caricature artist will be providing entertainment and toffee candy will be supplied by Enstroms

Additionally, each location will have food and treats, will receive a visit from Chuck & Don’s new mascot and will have displays of the Painted Pet Parade. Customers can also enter to win one company-wide grand prize of a $500 Chuck & Don’s gift card and a photo session and portrait by local photographer, Paul Maynard.  In addition, customers at each of the four Colorado stores can enter to win a $100 Chuck & Don’s gift card and a $50 pet basket.  Friends of Chuck® should watch their mailboxes for a special grand opening $15 off a $75 purchase coupon in the Chuck & Don’s spring newsletter.

This is HappyDogGeno writing this post. Don’t worry, that’s me. I’m going undercover as the detective on duty. I even went so far as to disguise my breed so I look like a TINY dog. I can’t be too careful as I’m sniffing out the details for this year’s Dumb Friend’s League Furry Scurry.

Here’s the scoop so far:

When you think of celebrities and their pets, what names come to mind? Paris Hilton?  Oprah?  Zooey Deschanel?

We’re excited to be including some of the local Colorado celebrities at the opening of our newest Colorado location in Aurora on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20, 2012.  This celebration, encompassing ALL of the Colorado stores, kicks off with a very special pet art project, including activities at each of the three current locations—Cherry Creek, Centennial and Littleton.

Local celebrities from media, entertainment, business, sports and politics are being invited to participate for a chance to create and share their artistic vision of a simple dog or cat figure. The guest “artists” will be given a model of a dog or cat to paint or decorate. Judging of the ten “painted pets” will be held at the Chuck & Don’s booth at the Annual Furry Scurry on May 5th following the race.  Phillip Tedeschi of Animal Planet fame and Clinical Director of DU’s Human-Animal Connection will judge the pet artwork.
