January 5 is National Bird Day. Organized by the nonprofit group Born Free USA, a leader in animal welfare and wildlife conservation, it brings attention to issues critical to the protection and survival of birds.

Take the day to celebrate and learn about birds – both wild and domestic. Study different birds species, go on a birdwatching hike or even practice bird calls!

Chuck & Don’s carries a wide range of  wild bird and caged birds products. Each store stocks a variety of quality food, treats, vitamins, supplements and cages.

These are a few of the bird foods we carry in our stores (for product availability and pricing please call the store nearest you):

Spray millet provides a comforting, natural, low fat, nutritional treat. Foraging through sweet tasting millet provides soothing nutrition for feather pickers and birds who are left alone during the day with minimal interaction.

Our Colorado locations stock a selection of Kaylor foods for indoor birds.

Suet is a great winter treat for outdoor birds. Our Minnesota stores carry C&S Wild Bird Suet and Wildlife Sciences suet ranging from fruit to nut flavors.

We want to support you in caring for the birds. Come in – we’ll ‘tweet’ you right and help you find just what you need!

A new pet for the holidays? Ooooh, just think about the squeals of delight and smiles on their faces!

But wait…have you stopped to consider everything involved in caring for a pet? Don’t make an impulse purchase.Take the time to make an informed decision so the new pet will get the love and care he/she deserves.

Here are some things you should keep in mind before giving a pet as a gift:

Does the recipient have the time and are they committed to caring for a new pet? Owning a new cat or dog is a long term obligation, most likely 10+ years. Who will feed them, exercise them and clean up after them (inside and outside the home)?

Is the new pet a good fit for the recipient family? The new pet should meet all the family members prior to adoption including other pets to help ensure for a suitable match.

Does the recipient know what behavior to expect from the pet and how to train them? Research the pet and breed you are considering. Young pets have special needs and require lots of attention. All pets should be properly trained.

Can the recipient afford a new pet? The expenses can add up quickly – new gear, pet food, vet visits, grooming, training and boarding fees when you are away.

The bottom line is that the pet’s long-term welfare should be a priority. Their new home should be their “forever home.”

Feeding Birds in Winter

The snow is on the ground, the cold is in the air. Our feathered friends can use your help in keeping them well fed during the winter months. Setting up feeding stations in your yard is a good way to help the birds and can also be a year round source of enjoyment and entertainment for you.

The type of bird that visits your yard will vary according to your location, but some common birds include house finches, sparrows, goldfinches, woodpeckers, chickadees, cardinals, robins, juncos and starlings.

Keep the following in mind as you’re creating your feeding stations:

  • Bird feeders should have covers which extend several inches over the feeder itself to give protection from the elements. This protects the birds as well as keeps the bird feed from getting wet and spoiled.
  • Place your bird feeders in sheltered locations which provide protection from the wind.  If your bird feeder is placed by your house for optimum bird watching, make sure there are protective hedges where birds can fly to safety from predators.  If windows are nearby, use window clings to keep the birds from colliding into the windows.
  • Clean your bird feeder regularly, even in the winter months. This will keep mold and mildew at bay, helping to keep the bird population healthy. Make sure the feeder is completely dry before refilling.

As you are selecting bird feed for your bird population, consider which birds are visiting your stations. Store the bird feed in a storage bin that is kept in a cool dry place, protected from bugs and mice. Nourishing bird feeds include:

  • Black oil sunflower seed
  • Hulled peanuts or roasted peanut parts
  • Niger and thistle seed
  • Suet – including the popular peanut blen
  • White millet seed

Stop by your local Chuck & Don’s store to pick up the birdfeed for the birds in your neighborhood.  Feeding the birds and watching them will help brighten the long winter for you.

Are you looking to attract birds to the feeders in your yard? If so, you will want to be attentive to details such as the type of food you’re using to attract specific birds, the type of feeder you’re using and placement of the feeder.

Of course quality of feed is important- one that does not contain filler and/or seed hulls.  At Chuck & Don’s we carry a variety of high quality bird food, specifically formulated for wild birds such as cardinals, orioles, bluebirds, finches, hummingbirds and more. Currently we have a coupon for a free 5 lb. bag of Nature’s Seasons Cardinal Mix if you purchase a Nature’s Season Bird Feeder.

While you’re stocking up on bird feed, check out our supply of feeders. Our feeders are made with quality materials, ensuring their longevity.
