The American Humane Association has been celebrating Be Kind to Animals Week® since 1915! In this annual tradition, they commemorate the role animals play in our lives, promote ways to continue to treat them humanely, and encourage others, especially children, to do the same. As animal lover Betty White says, “As far as I am concerned, every week should be Be Kind to Animals Week®.”

While much progress has been made since the program was launched almost a century ago, the fact remains that 7-8 million animals still end up in shelters every year. “One of the most important ways to ‘be kind’ to animals is to adopt a shelter pet and give them the forever home they so desperately need,” says Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Association. “If adopting is not possible, consider fostering a pet or volunteering with a local shelter or rescue group. Our pets are devoted to us and for them every day is ‘Be Kind to People Day.’ The very least we can do is show them our love and compassion. There are so many ways for all of us to lend kindness to a voiceless, helpless animal.”

One way you can help support the animals is by joining a local animal event. Chuck & Don’s will be participating in the following walk-a-thon events this Saturday, May 4 and next Saturday, May 11. Choose one or both – then come out to support the animals and be sure to stop by and see us!

5/4 Animal Humane Society’s Walk for Animals - 8:30am-2pm at Animal Humane Society’s Golden Valley campus
5/11 Animal Humane Society of Goodhue County Walk-A-Thon - 10am-2pm at Colvill Park in Red Wing

Colorado
5/4 Furry Scurry to benefit Dumb Friends League – 9am-Noon at Washington Park in Denver.
5/11 Lucky Mutt Strut to benefit MaxFund Animal Adoption Shelter – 8am-12pm at Cheesman Park in Denver. Our mascot, Lucky, will be there too!

These events will take place rain or shine – so please come! Help support the animals and the organizations that care for them. Be a voice for the voiceless!

Chuck & Don’s 19th Minnesota location is open for business in Edina! We’re located just east of Southdale Center in the Yorkdale Shoppes across from Cub Foods at 6821 York Avenue South. Store Hours are Monday thru Friday 9am – 9pm, Saturday 9am – 6pm and Sunday 11am – 6pm.

Do you love being outdoors with your pooch in the snow? Do you cross country ski? Then you’ll love the Chuck & Don’s Skijoring Loppet One and Two Dog Skijoring Championships Feb. 2-3! Saturday, Feb. 2  one dog skijoring teams race 7K, 4.5K, and 2.5K distances around Lake of the Isles before finishing in Uptown, Minneapolis. Sunday, Feb. 3 skijoring 7K and 14K races take place on the challenging hills at Theodore Wirth Park.

Interested in competing? Online registration ends tonight 1/29! There is no race-day registration. Visit the City of Lakes Loppet website for more information and rules.

Even if you are not participating – come on out and join us at 1:30pm on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Lake of the Isles or 1:00 pm on Sunday, Feb. 3 at Theodore Wirth Park to cheer on the racers and their dogs at these fun events!

THANK YOU to everyone who has already donated to our annual ‘Paw Print’ Campaign. If you’d like to make a contribution there’s still time – the Paw Print fundraiser continues through Dec. 31. Stop in any Chuck & Don’s location and purchase a paw print for only $1!

100% of the total paw prints purchased will go to animal welfare organizations. Chuck & Don’s will make a 25% match (up to $14,000) of the total contributions raised during the paw print campaign.

In Minnesota, contributions will benefit and be split equally between Feline Rescue, Minnesota Humane Society and Pet Haven of Minnesota.

In Colorado, donations will benefit the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

Thank you to everyone who stopped in our stores on Black Friday from 7-9 am! We had 555 humans and 376 pets come through the doors. That means over 900 pounds of pet food will go to Minnesota and Colorado food shelves – Wow! It’s heart-warming to know that this pet food will help to keep families and their pets together this holiday season.

Here are the totals for 2012:

Minnesota
Second Harvest Heartland – 747 lbs.
Red Wing Area Food Shelf – 100 lbs.

Colorado
Food Bank of the Rockies – 116 lbs.
